Also known as Cherryfield, Cherryfield Red, or Benton Red.
Discovered around 1853 as a chance seedling in an abandoned nursery in Ottawa, Illinois, and later introduced commercially by nurseryman Arthur Bryant of Princeton, Illinois. DNA testing by the Maine Heritage Orchard has since found it genetically identical to the Maine heirloom Cherryfield, muddying that origin story. Firm, fine-grained, crisp flesh; sweet and fruity with abundant juice. Most often used for pies and sauce but also good fresh. Vigorous trees bear young but tend biennial; fruit hangs well on the tree and keeps up to four months in storage.
