McLaughlin Plum

$35.00

-50°F with occasional winter injury. Unknown; Gage type, Bangor, ME.  Ripens in early September.

Tree has upright, strong framework; fruit small (1.75 in) and round with yellow skin, with melting yellow flesh; juicy, rich, sugar-sweet.

This tree introduced to Bill by Heron Breen. From Heron: "The story is, of course, the search by a Maine person for a Plum from their home region....I grew up with Bangor as the nearby "big city". It also the story a young person being lucky enough to have a relative that was an expert. I am not even sure how my search for the McLaughlin plum came into my conversations with my Uncle Mark.....but immediately he said he knew some folks who would know if anyone in the US did. One of these quiet skilled collectors maintained the plum as a grafted branch. This person gave budwood to my Uncle, who budded and grew-out a good series of trees. Meanwhile, the owner of the single grafted branch sent real fruit to me for examination and confirmation that the plum indeed fit the description....A clincher is that it has a unique pit shape. My Uncle sent me the trees for planting, most of which I shared with a few good orchardists, the City of Bangor, and with Bill."

Pollen group B.

Ripens in early September.
