A low, spreading shrub native to northern prairies. Reaches 3–6 feet at maturity, often forming thickets that stabilize slopes and provide excellent wildlife cover and food. Fragrant white spring flowers attract pollinators, followed by small dark purple cherries relished by birds and suitable for jelly or wine. Highly tolerant of drought, wind, and poor soils. Best in full sun.
