Asparagus

Asparagus prefers a sunny spot with well-drained, fertile soil; preferably slightly sandy. Asparagus is a perennial crop that requires good soil preparation to thrive for many years. Before planting, amend the soil with plenty of compost or well-aged manure. Plant asparagus crowns in early spring, as soon as the soil can be worked. Dig trenches 6-8 inches deep and 3-6 feet apart, placing crowns 10-18 inches apart within the trench. Spread the roots out, cover with 2 inches of soil, and gradually fill in the trench as the plants grow, keeping the soil loose and free of weeds. Asparagus needs consistent moisture, especially in the first two years as the plants establish. Mulch around plants to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Do not harvest spears in the first year, and go light on harvest in year 2; allow the plants to mature and strengthen. Full harvests typically begin in the third year.
